Detailed Description
Programs | * The show has closed. It is the early 18th century in Joseon, and Gyeongjong is in the second year of his reign. In an effort to remove him from the throne, the Noron faction has positioned his younger half-brother, Prince Yeoning-gun, as his successor. Gyeongjong lost his mother, Royal Concubine Jang, when he was just 14 years old, and it was Royal Concubine Choi – Yeoning-gun’s mother - who revealed Jang’s crimes to him. Adding to the tension, Gyeongjong’s mentor and friend, military officer Hong Suchan, hides a secret of his own. The Revised Annals of King Gyeongjong is a three-person drama centered around these three characters. Though it deals with heavy themes, the play is driven by the tension dynamics within this triangular relationship. The king, who suffers from narcolepsy; his half-brother, who threatens the throne; and the officer who closely observes them and records history, create a complex interplay. The audience is drawn into their emotional struggles, finding it difficult to take sides, as each character’s wounds, anguish, and inescapable fate are revealed. The live band - featuring piano, cello, and three guitars - x_heightens the conflicts and confrontations. A standout moment of the production occurs in the second half, when King Gyeongjong sings “Let Me Dream.” |
